There were times in my illness when the pain got so bad and the medication would not work, I had to do something to make the pain bearable.
I learned from Tony Robbins's tapes on Enpowerment to use humor to feel better. I would imagine I could put on a Jack in the Box Head with Mickey Mouse Ears to complain to the doctor about the pain. The thought was so ridiculous, I would start laughing. My brain would then produce endorphins that made the pain bearable if only for a while. Sometimes this was all I had to hold on to.
The habit remains and sometimes may seem offensive to others. I try real hard to understand but I slip occasionally (a lot).
I usually don't get into the past because I feel like Caroline Myss says, we have to get on with our lives. Maybe this will shed some light on the subject.
